How to choose your YouTube mid-roll ad frequency

Choose ad-slot spacing around your video’s structure, understand Monvilo frequency presets and review the saved layout without assuming guaranteed impressions.

The short answer: use frequency as a target for the number and spacing of ad slots, then review the actual transitions. “How many minutes between ads?” does not have one useful answer for an interview, a documentary and a short lesson.

Here, frequency means placement density in the editor, not the number of ads an individual viewer will see. If you have not used the editor yet, begin with the YouTube Studio setup guide.

Know what you are measuring

Separate three things:

  • Slot count: the number of saved points on the timeline.
  • Spacing: how far apart those points are and where long gaps remain.
  • Actual impressions: whether the ad system uses those opportunities during a viewing session.

You cannot read the third measure from the marker count. YouTube explains the distinction between a slot and the decision to serve an ad.

For comparing your own layouts, you can describe the number of slots per ten minutes. Four slots in a twenty-minute video, for example, equals two per ten minutes. That is a description, not a recommendation or an impression forecast. The average also hides distribution: three points could sit in one short section while the rest of the video has few transitions.

Start with the structure of the video

Before choosing a density, identify complete passages:

  1. Where does the introduction end and the main explanation begin?
  2. Where does an explanation or an interview answer finish?
  3. Which on-screen actions should be watched as a continuous sequence?
  4. Where is there a new topic, chapter or calm transition?

In a tutorial, the boundaries between explanation, demonstration and review can be candidates. In an interview, short replies and breaths may not complete an answer. These are editorial prompts; listen to the actual passages instead of choosing points from the format name alone.

When background music continues, the mixed waveform may not show an obvious silence. Our guide to voiceover pauses over music covers that distinction.

Why an even grid cannot choose the transition for you

Suppose a target interval lands in the middle of an important sentence. Following it literally just to keep the gaps equal would miss the editorial purpose. Review a nearby transition, then reassess the layout as a whole.

The reverse also happens: many plausible pauses cluster in one section. That does not mean every one belongs in the final layout. Compare neighboring candidates and retain those you have a clear reason to use.

The opening diagram shows different densities for one hypothetical video. Its points are deliberately unevenly spaced. It does not define a universally correct count or a schedule of future ad impressions.

What Low, Medium and High mean in Monvilo

The strategy tooltip in Monvilo 2.18.58 describes approximate targets: Low around every four minutes, Medium around every two, and High around every one to one-and-a-half minutes. Custom uses your settings. These are product placement targets, not YouTube rules or universal channel recommendations.

The outcome depends on available candidates and feedback. With fewer suitable pauses, the saved layout may be less dense than the selected target. Do not automatically compensate by inserting arbitrary points within speech.

In the standard workflow, the extension finds pauses, saves the selected slots and checks feedback. Start with one video and inspect the result. If placements already exist, read about retaining manual slots on a repeat run before proceeding.

How to revise frequency without losing track

Make a baseline note: date, selected mode, timestamps and the reason for the change. Then choose one task, such as reviewing a crowded section or looking for a transition in a long gap. Avoid changing every setting at once if you want to understand each decision.

After saving, check:

  • Whether the chosen points interrupt speech.
  • Whether several nearby slots appeared where you did not intend them.
  • Whether important manual transitions remain.
  • Which points received warnings and which were replaced.

If you later compare views or revenue, account for changes in the audience, video topic and time period. A change that happens at the same time does not establish that the new frequency caused it. For an initial pass, focus on directly observable results: the timestamps, transition context and saved state.

Common mistakes

Dividing runtime by an interval and treating the answer as a required count. That calculation ignores the opening, ending and location of suitable pauses.

Counting manual and automatic slots as separate plans. Review the combined timeline. See how the two types work together.

Increasing density just because no warnings appear. The absence of a warning does not establish that each additional point will improve the viewing experience or revenue.

Copying someone else’s timestamps. Two videos with the same runtime can have very different structures. Reuse a review process rather than another creator’s exact timing pattern.

A practical starting point

Find transitions first, choose a restrained starting layout for your task, save it and review it. You do not need to fill every gap. If feedback flags a point, continue with our YouTube warning guide.
