Manual and automatic YouTube ad slots: how to use them together

Understand manual and automatic mid-roll slots, when to combine them and what Monvilo preserves. Practical examples and a review checklist.

The short answer: you choose manual placements; YouTube chooses automatic ones. You can use both. An extension that places points in the editor does not turn those points into YouTube’s own automatic slots. Those are different mechanisms.

The distinction matters when you add to an existing layout or run Monvilo again. First identify what is already in the video, then decide what needs changing. For the route to the editor, start with our YouTube Studio placement guide.

What the two types mean

YouTube’s official guidance describes manual placement, automatic placement and a combination. Manual points identify opportunities chosen by the creator; automatic points come from YouTube. Neither type guarantees an ad impression.

This article concerns mid-roll ads in long-form videos. A sponsor segment edited into the footage is a separate part of the content, not one of these settings.

For your workflow, distinguish who chose a moment from how a point reached the editor. You might listen to a transition and insert it yourself. Monvilo might find a pause and add a point for you. Both differ from a placement that Studio identifies as automatically added by YouTube.

The opening diagram illustrates two layers of one layout. It is not a Studio screenshot or a schedule of the ads a viewer will receive.

When combining manual and automatic slots is useful

Imagine a tutorial with an introduction, an explanation of an error, a repair demonstration and a final check. You know the transition between explanation and demonstration well and want to consider it for a break. You do not necessarily need to rebuild the whole layout to review that one point.

Our suggested approach is to:

  • Inspect the existing layout and note deliberately chosen transitions.
  • Listen before and after the candidate and check the picture.
  • Look for another nearby slot serving essentially the same transition.
  • Save a limited change and review the result.

A focused edit is easier to understand afterwards. If you add many manual points, change the target frequency and switch off automatic placements in one pass, you will have more changes to disentangle.

Review the combined timeline as one layout. Do not independently plan a full set of automatic points and another full set of manual points without looking at where they sit together.

When you might prefer only your chosen transitions

Sometimes a creator has a specific editorial constraint: a long demonstration should remain continuous, and potential breaks should be reviewed only between chapters. That is a reason to inspect the automatic-placement setting alongside the timestamps you choose.

It is not a general recommendation to disable automatic slots. The appropriate choice depends on the task. Manual placement also needs review: knowing the material does not rule out a mistaken timestamp or an awkward interruption.

If you have not selected transitions yet, avoid starting with a rigid interval. Find suitable passages first. For narrated videos with a music bed, see our explanation of speech pauses over background music.

How Monvilo handles existing points

Standard placement in Monvilo 2.18.58, the version reviewed for this guide, preserves YouTube’s automatic slots. If manual points already exist, the extension offers a choice: retain suitable unflagged points within the selected frequency, or remove the manual points and choose a new layout.

Running an automated extension workflow is therefore different from enabling YouTube’s automatic placements. Monvilo helps choose and save points through the editor while accounting for YouTube’s own placements separately.

Read the detailed explanation of keeping manual slots when running placement again before choosing a replacement policy. A full reset is not the default answer to one awkward transition.

A review routine for a combined layout

Before editing, record the original timestamps or take a screenshot of the list. Then make one clearly defined pass:

  1. Confirm the channel, video and current automatic-slot setting.
  2. Define the task: add a transition, review manual points or revise the overall approach.
  3. Listen to the chosen passages in context and save the changes.
  4. Compare the final list with your notes: what stayed, disappeared or was added?
  5. Review warnings using our guide to “Ads unlikely to show here”.

Keep a short change note for next time: date, reason and final layout. It is easier to work from that record than to remember why a point was placed elsewhere a week ago.

Common questions

Does adding a manual point disable automatic placements?

Do not assume so. Manual and automatic placements can coexist in Studio. Check the setting when you intend to use a particular combination.

Should I duplicate an automatic point manually?

First identify the problem you are trying to solve. If the existing transition suits your purpose, a nearby manual point does not inherently improve it. For spacing decisions, continue with choosing your mid-roll frequency.

Do more points mean every viewer gets more ads?

No. The markers are not a counter of future impressions. Review the transitions, saved outcome and feedback instead of treating the number alone as a measure of placement quality.
